GMP provided professional landscape architectural design services for The Harbor Club, a 42-story, 570,000 sq. ft mixed-use condominium development located on the harbor of downtown San Diego, CA. Formally One Harbor Drive, The Harbor Club was developed by Stark Companies in 1991 and includes a set of twin towers, each 42 stories high, with 202 living units on the upper floors and retail on the lower floors.
Our design focus was to develop a strong visual and pedestrian link with the San Diego Convention Center located directly across the street, and with the Harbor Drive Linear Park. Our designs included an outdoor recreation area and pool area on the third floor terrace and a resort style park setting on the ground floor. The landscape architecture provided for a number of outdoor plazas, seating areas and expansive tropical landscape setting.
The Harbor Club project represented an important pedestrian link into the downtown pedestrian urban greenbelt connecting the downtown to the Gas Lamp District and to Petco Baseball Park. Our designs carefully incorporated the San Diego Trolley system into the landscape with creative hardscape and landscape treatments. Outdoor patios and seating areas were designed for use by the retail shops and restaurants. The design development incorporated ongoing design input from the City of San Diego and from the Center City Development Agency to ensure city wide design integration. The lush tropical landscape provides a key San Diego landscape statement in the downtown area.
